Writing a Book: 5 Places to Unstick Yourself

There are many hurdles along the race to finishing a book meaning there are many places along the way where want-to-be authors can get hung up.

I know how it can be you have a good idea but aren’t sure where to go with it. Or maybe you have your thoughts together and just need to get them on paper. Perhaps you’re beyond that and have a first draft done, but you aren’t sure where to go to find editing and publishing professionals to make your book a reality. Here I address the issues that seem to hold writers up in getting their books done.

How do I get started? Make the commitment. There’s power in making the decision. One technique I have my clients do is create a “goal statement” and write a few paragraphs about why they want to write a book and how it will fit into their business and life. This serves as a touchstone for the whole process do it now.

How do I select my book topic? When you’re creating a big business card, your book topic should be centered on expressing your unique marketing message while giving your readers information they want to know. What do you find yourself explaining to prospects and customers again and again? What unique take you do you have about your industry or area of expertise? What is it about you and what you do that is different than your competitors? That’s what you write about. 

What’s the fastest way to getting my out of my head and on paper? Talk your book. For each chapter, create an outline of points you want to include, jot a few prompts underneath each point and then dictate your book. Have the dictation transcribed and you have a solid first draft of your masterpiece.

Should I find a traditional publisher or self-publish? If you’re looking to create your big business card, the answer definitely self-publish. Unless you’ve worked with a traditional publisher before, it’s tough to get their attention. Plus, after your work is accepted it can take up to two years or more before it appears on shelf. Finally, you’re still in charge of marketing your book, which leads me to?

How do I promote my book? Start locally by submitting news releases to area media. Don’t make it an announcing the publishing of my book release, but instead feature your book’s biggest selling point, which also features your expertise and a focused topic the media can latch on to. After that, go to the Net by submitting articles pulled from your book to ezines, sites and blogs that are a good match for your material. Remember to include a compelling bio box at the end with a link to your site.

How do I get on Amazon? Good news it’s super easy! Your book printer or publisher might do it for you, or you can do it yourself by joining the Amazon Advantage program here from the Amazon website. One of the chief requirements is your book’s ISBN if you have that, you’re golden.

Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you worked out your daring muscle each and every day – stopping at nothing to create the life and business of your dreams? How many women do you and I know who truly have the courage to live life on their own terms, are doing what they love, and are fulfilled and happy? Doing what you love, knowing that it matters and getting financially and soulfully rewarded for it … what can anything be better than that.

Life is too short to waste it by always erring on the cautious side or playing it safe instead. The worst feeling you can have is regret — regrets of unfulfilled dreams and unmet goals. But to live without regrets means you have to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone. You have to dare to dream big and pursue and monetize your dreams, passions and expertise in spite of any fears, flaws, circumstances, challenges or setbacks.

What might keep you from living a daring life?
Your stories, past disappointments, hurts and pains… in short the things you feel shame, guilt or blame about and that you haven’t let go of – like Tony Robbins says: “What stands between you and what you desire (dream life) are the stories you tell yourself (and others) about why you can’t have what you want.” Playing a huge part is also the fears – fear of humiliation, rejection or failure, and possibly the lack of self-esteem, the feeling of not being good enough or worthy enough to deserve what you truly want.

I’m amazed as to how many women I personally know who have achieve a certain level of professional and material success, and are still feeling inadequate in at least one area of their life and are often suffering in silence, thinking that they are the only ones feeling that way. That is not the case. I know that because I’ve been there, and at times, I still struggle in spite of all my personal, professionals and financial accomplishments and awards.

We work so hard at our business or career but the truth is that a lot of successful women, like us, don’t know the first thing when it comes to loving ourselves. We have escaped our inner baggage in hopes that success and money will be the answer. In today’s society image is everything and people are afraid to admit to themselves, let alone to others, “I’m not happy.” We fill ourselves with careers and expensive things only to still feel empty. But escaping to your career only leave you exhausted. To be truly abundant, joyous and fulfilled, you must, not only acknowledge, but appreciate and be grateful for your hurts, pains, and disappointments and come to peace with where you are. To appreciate the personal and professional daring journey that you’re on. To love the person you have become. It’s time to reclaim your power and truly enjoy the rest of your life.

What can you do right now to become more daring?
I like to say that change is constant and inevitable but growth and progress are not.

We make a lot of important decisions when we don’t much about ourselves – in our twenties we decide on the type of career we are going to have, where we are going to live, the person we are going to marry, whether or not we are going to have children, and so and so forth, so it’s no wonder that so many of us come to a time and place in our lives, where we find ourselves questioning our choices and decisions, and are wondering,… if we had to do all over again, would we be making the same decisions.

So if you find yourself at a crossroad living a life that doesn’t thrill or excite you, the big question is: what are you daring yourself to do about it? Ask yourself: If not now then when? And if not that (that being the status quo), then what?

You must find and reconnect with what makes you happy today and DARE to go for it!

The happiest people (and often the wealthiest) are those living their passions and dreams despite any difficulties, fears, circumstances or setbacks. You have the ability to be, do or have anything you want. But at the end of the day, YOU get to choose how your life is going to be!

Dare to Love Thyself: Dare to become your own best friend. It starts right there, the expression of how we love ourselves is the same expression of how we love others. It is a critical place to start. If you don’t love yourself, you cannot really love anyone else. Is your life a kaleidoscope or have you been living in black and white? Have you been holding back or settling for less than you can have and deserve… less money, fun, freedom and laughter? So mired in reality, so busy living by our clocks and calendars, we often forget what matters to us or have little time to even think about it. You body is a wilderness of self discovery and a canvas for creative change! Meaning that there is infinite wisdom to be accessed from within your body about you and your life, and that by making shifts and changes in your body, you can affect shifts and changes in your life. The trick to tapping into your body’s wisdom however, is to affirm its brilliance and its blessing.

If you’re walking around all day resenting and criticizing your body, it’s unlikely that it will offer you any insights and gifts. On the other hand, if you regularly acknowledge how blessed you are to live in a body, how intelligent the body is in the way it functions and makes most of what you accomplish in a day possible, and appreciate it for the innate wisdom it houses, you will have much greater access to its abundant gifts.

Once when I was ill, just a common cold, I noticed how inconvenient and un-appealing it was to be laid up, not able to carry out my daily activities, no energy to live a normal life. I noticed how much I take my body for granted when it’s healthy. Often I just drag it around instead of savoring how delicious my body can make me feel and the opportunity for sensual adventure it makes available to me.

Take time each day to have a sensual body experience, whether it’s stopping to smell the roses, enjoying the texture of your clothes against your skin, or letting yourself merge into the beautiful vision of a sun set. These simple yet vivid experiences will bring you back to your body as an instrument for self discovery and creative transformation.

Home businesses are great and we can all expound the advantages: flexible hours, no commute, working in your sweats, convenience, and independence, etc. But when was the last time you got out of your bunny slippers and attended a live function with real people?

I think it was Woody Allen who said that 80% of success is showing up, and although it was a satirical remark, there’s truth in it. If it’s been awhile, let me refresh your memory about why it is essential that you get out of the house regularly. It’s good for your business, and really good for you too!

There are many different ways of getting out of the house with your business in mind, such as calling up a colleague and meeting for coffee or a drink, attending a networking event, or signing up for a seminar.

Start by checking your news outlet’s business events calendar for local happenings. Consider attending your chamber of commerce networking gathering, Business Networking International, local entrepreneur group meetings, or local CRAVE party. To make a lasting impression with people at these events, make a point to attend regularly, and they’ll think of you when they need your type of product or service.

You’ll want to sign up for your local organization’s newsletters, Facebook, and Twitter accounts so you can keep abreast of their events. Be selective and attend the gatherings that really appeal. Grab a colleague or friend, and you’ll be sure to have a great time, no matter what, or, if you’re more daring and want to really connect with new people, go solo.

I know it takes effort at the end of the day to get dressed up and go out, but it is sort of like exercising, once you do it, you’ll feel great. Here are some of the advantages of attending live functions:

 1. You’ll meet old friends, make new friends, and see face to face what people are up to. We all get busy and forget to reach out to one another sometimes, but seeing people right in front of you is stimulating and renews your core.

2. If you’re attending a meeting or training session, you’ll learn new, exciting information, hear first hand other’s successes and get tips about what doesn’t work. These mixers are great places to learn about how other people are getting their business needs met and how to learn about great deals and save money.

3. You’ll have a chance to meet potential mentors, people who are ahead of you in the game, and then in turn you can become a mentor to someone else who needs your guidance some day.

4. Just being in the room with a lot of like-minded people can be invigorating, and can give you the necessary jumpstart to dive into a project you’ve been wanting to start, and keep your momentum going.

5. There’s no substitute for showing up with your smiling face. People forget quickly, and by getting out there, you remind them that you’re still here going strong and ready to offer your products and services.

6. Every successful entrepreneur eventually needs to be comfortable speaking publically before a crowd. Attending these smaller mixers and honing your message first one-on-one, then at your table of networkers, and then finally in front of the entire room, is a fantastic way to build your courage. If you need more help in this area, Toastmasters, whose mission is to help people with public speaking and leadership skills through public speaking and feedback, comes highly recommended.

7. Attend with the intention of connecting with at least one individual, and you’ll never be disappointed. This may not be a potential client, but if they become an acquaintance and colleague, they may know someone else who may need your products and services. Get to know people deeper than these one night events allow, and grab some cards, make some calls, and have some coffee dates. That’s when the more fruitful conversations transpire.

8. Remember that people attending these functions are all trying to spread the word about their businesses too. Be interested in them, what they’re doing, and what they offer as well. Even if you don’t need their services, you may be able to connect them up with someone else, and they’ll remember the favor.

As you see, there are so many benefits to getting out of the house sometimes even if you are a die hard home-based business fan. Exchange those bunny slippers for high heels at least twice a month, and I’ll see you out there!
